What Is Vital Pulp Therapy?
Vital Pulp Therapy is a dental treatment designed to preserve the living pulp inside a tooth. The pulp is the soft tissue at the core of your tooth — it contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue that keep the tooth alive, healthy, and functional.
When the pulp becomes mildly inflamed due to deep decay or trauma — but still has the capacity to heal — VPT steps in before a full root canal becomes necessary. Instead of removing the entire pulp, the treatment targets only the affected area, protecting and supporting the healthy tissue that remains.

Types of Vital Pulp Therapy
There are three main types of VPT, each suited to different levels of pulp involvement:
Indirect Pulp Therapy Used when deep decay is very close to the pulp but has not yet reached it. A bioactive protective material is placed over the remaining dentin, encouraging the tooth to heal naturally without any pulp exposure.
Direct Pulp Capping When a small, controlled exposure of the pulp occurs — often during cavity preparation — a special material is applied directly over the exposed pulp. This stimulates the tooth to form new protective dentin and seal itself.
Pulpotomy The inflamed portion of the pulp in the crown of the tooth is removed, while the healthy pulp tissue in the root canals is left completely intact. This procedure is particularly common in children and teenagers with developing permanent teeth.

Is Vital Pulp Therapy painful? The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. You may feel pressure but should not experience pain during treatment. Mild sensitivity afterwards is normal and typically resolves within a few days.
How long does VPT take? Most cases can be completed in a single appointment of approximately 60–90 minutes.
Will I definitely avoid a root canal after VPT? If treatment is successful, a root canal may not be needed at all. However, if the pulp does not respond as expected during follow-up, root canal treatment can still be carried out. Early treatment gives you the best possible chance of success.
Is VPT available for children? Yes. Pulpotomy in particular is commonly performed on children’s primary and young permanent teeth. It is a safe and well-established procedure in paediatric dentistry.
